How the Sumida River Dinner Cruise Works

Send any dietary request two days ahead, board at Azumabashi, and plan for two and a half hours on the river and the bay.

  1. Dietary Requests Two Days Ahead

The listing asks for dietary requests or meal changes at least two days before, by message, and charges a handling fee of 1,000 yen a guest for them. Nothing can be changed on the day.

  2. Board at Azumabashi

The boat leaves from Azumabashi in Sumida ward, across the Sumida River from Asakusa Station. Check the meeting point and time on your voucher.

  3. Down the River to the Bay

The course is served as the boat runs down the Sumida to Tokyo Bay. Near the Rainbow Bridge and Odaiba it stops, and you climb up to the roof for the view.

  4. Back Under the Skytree

The rest of the meal comes on the way back, with a second stop for the lit-up Tokyo Skytree before the boat returns to Asakusa.

The Guide

Why Asakusa, and What the Free-Flow Evening Is Like

It is the longest and most local of the shared cruises: more dishes, all drinks included, and most of the guests Japanese.

The Sumida River dinner cruise to book is Yakatabune Amitatsu’s houseboat from Azumabashi, across the river from Asakusa: two and a half hours down the Sumida to Tokyo Bay and back, with a Japanese course of about 14 dishes and free-flow drinks, alcohol included. It is sold as the Sumida River Traditional Yakatabune Dinner Cruise, from US$102 a person (checked October 2026), and rated 4.6 out of 5 from 956 reviews.

What the evening is like

The boat leaves Azumabashi with Tokyo Skytree behind it and runs down the Sumida while the first dishes arrive. Out on Tokyo Bay it stops near the Rainbow Bridge and Odaiba, and you climb up to the roof deck for the city lit up across the water; on the way back there is a second stop for the Skytree. The drinks are all-you-can-drink, beer, sake, whisky, wine, plum wine, tea and soft drinks, and the staff keep the glasses full. Recent guests describe a good meal at the right pace, two trips up to the roof for photos, and a boat full of Japanese guests, which several found the best part.

Two things to know. The course is a traditional Japanese one, and one family noted the dishes are unusual for children. And the crew speak through a translator rather than giving an English guided commentary; the listing lists an English guide as not included.

The rules are stricter than on the 90-minute boats

Amitatsu’s free cancellation runs up to 10 days before, not 24 hours. Dietary requests or meal changes must be sent at least two days ahead, by message, and carry a handling fee of 1,000 yen a guest; nothing can be changed on the day. If your plans might move, the 90-minute boats from Etchujima are the more flexible choice.

Amitatsu or the 90-minute sukiyaki boat?

They suit different evenings. Amitatsu is the full yakatabune night: longer, more dishes, everything to drink included, and a mostly local crowd. Orange Tour’s Odaiba-route yakatabune is shorter at 90 minutes, built for visitors with a multilingual host and a live shamisen performance, and serves sukiyaki with soft drinks; alcohol is extra. Choose Amitatsu if you drink and want the traditional evening; choose the Etchujima boat for a first night in Tokyo or if you do not drink.

In spring: the cherry blossom route

When the cherry trees along the Sumida bloom, at the end of March and into early April, Orange Tour runs a separate 90-minute cherry blossom cruise on the river with sukiyaki or a tea ceremony, and dates for spring 2027 are already open. The cherry blossom cruise guide explains the timing.

Vendrame Belgium

"The three Italians were very satisfied. They said that about 30 people will be coming to Japan next February, and they would like to be taken on your company's pleasure boat. Thank you very much."

Sugiura Japan

"It was really nice. We ate well. It should be noted that these are Japanese meals, so they are a bit unusual for children. The drinks are all-you-can-drink. Otherwise, the experience is really nice. I recommend it for those who get seasick – no worries."

Sandrine French Polynesia

"Wow…what a truly wonderful experience. The crew were extremely organized and welcoming. The majority of the guests were Japanese and it was lovely to see so many men & women dining dressed up in their traditional clothes. The set dinner menu was a very authentic Japanese dinner, delicious, and more food & alcohol than we could ask for. I wish I had saved more room for all the delicious tempura items which came towards the end of the meal. The views as we went along the Sumida River were great and having the opportunity to see lighted fountain show near Odaiba Marine Park was a highlight. We also stooped for a good view of the Tokyo tower. I would highly recommend this experience. Note: most of the commentary is in Japanese but this did not affect our experience. Thanks to all the hardworking crew that made this a truly wonderful experience."
